Madera Community Hospital is set to unveil the 1.2-megawatt solar installation it commissioned in the spring giving the public a look at the second-largest solar project for health care facilities in California.
The project, on the southwest corner of the Madera Community Hospital campus, spans six acres with 5,000 ground mounted solar panels.
Power will be leased out by the project's designer and builder Borrego Solar of San Diego, which has installed more than 1,000 solar energy systems, including a 1.2-megawatt solar array at UC San Diego and and a 2.8-megawatt system on the campus of San Diego City College.
The Madera Chamber of Commerce will host a ceremony on Oct. 14 commemorating the system, complete with refreshments and a tour.
The Madera Community Hospital also announced plans to build a new central utility plant that will include a high efficiency chilled water system and building controls, all of which is expected to save more than $1 million over 20 years in energy costs.
