Coast Citrus Distributors
Borrego Solar developed, built and facilitated financing for three projects for Coast Citrus Distributors, a wholesaler of fruits and vegetables in the United States and Mexico since 1950.
The 2.1 megawatt (MW) portfolio includes 1.1 MW of rooftop solar installed at its Los Angeles facility, 655 kilowatts (kW) on its San Diego headquarters, and 432 kW at its Union City facility. Altogether, the systems are expected to generate approximately 4.1 million kW-hours of energy annually.
By installing solar on open, flat rooftops on its commercial buildings, Coast Citrus will minimize the risks of rising energy costs and provide a more sustainable model for its growing business that relies on refrigerators, freezers, and packing machinery for daily operations.
Coast Citrus financed its solar portfolio with operational leases with Farmers and Merchant Bank, enabling the company to go solar without paying any upfront costs and realize cost savings as soon as the system began operating.
Throughout the term of the lease, the portfolio is expected to generate enough emissions-free, clean energy to offset nearly 3,300 tons of carbon dioxide — the equivalent of offsetting emissions from 8 million miles driven, or the amount sequestered by planting more than 3,800 acres of U.S. forests.
