Porterville College Installing Solar Energy System in Parking Lots
Porterville College is partnering with Borrego Solar Systems to install a solar energy system on elevated shade structures over its parking lots.
In its first year, the system will generate an estimated 1.9 megawatt-hours of electricity, enough to power about 250 homes annually. It is also expected to annually offset 1,312 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equal to taking 276 cars off the road.
The $4 million system is expected to save $6.5 million in energy over the course of its lifetime and will meet 70% to 80% of the campus’ electricity demand. Any solar energy not consumed by the campus will be fed into the local electricity grid.
Borrego Solar is also constructing solar installations for other California schools and colleges, including College of the Sequoias, Newport-Mesa Unified School District and Glendale Unified School District.
